Common Signs of Mice

If a mice infestation is left to develop it can become extremely difficult to control. Mice have flexible skeletons that let them squeeze through tiny gaps - they can fit through a hole no bigger than a biro.

They reproduce at a remarkable rate: litters can be up to 14 young, and females can produce 10 litters a year. The problem becomes unmanageable very quickly, so it is crucial to seek professional mice control as soon as you notice the signs.

Mice Droppings - The Clearest Sign

Mice defecate frequently and leave up to 80 droppings a night. Their droppings are small (around 3-8mm long), dark, and often found around food sources - cabinets, bins, shelves, storage boxes and along skirting boards.

Pay particular attention to the insides and tops of cupboards. Mice are nocturnal but not inconspicuous - so the signs should be easy to spot once you know what to look for.

Other Ways to Identify Mice

Scratching SoundsPersistent scratching or tapping as mice scurry between walls and under floorboards
Bite MarksSmall sawdust piles where mice have nibbled wood, skirting, packaging or wires. Wire damage is a fire risk
Grease MarksDark smears around holes and corners where mice brush against walls with their oily fur
TracksSprinkle light flour or talc and check for fresh footprints and tail marks the next day
Urine and SmellA strong ammonia-like smell, especially in cupboards and lofts. Mice urinate frequently and leave trails
NestsBuilt from shredded materials, often in lofts, cavity walls, under floorboards, behind fridges and in airing cupboards

What To Do Next

  • Act quickly - mice breed rapidly and spread disease
  • Inspect cupboards, lofts and behind appliances
  • Do not rely on DIY traps for established infestations
  • Call a RSPH (BPCA) Level 2 Certified Tech for a same-day survey

Health Risks From Mice

  • Salmonella and Leptospirosis transmission
  • Contamination of food and surfaces
  • Wire damage that can cause house fires
